New Horror Out On DVD This Week: It's a Boob Filled Week

I'm not a Tarantino fan. In fact, I was kinda hoping that "Inglourious Basterds" would just take a big, giant turd at the box office... However, and much to my dismay, it beat "District 9" out of the top spot and did so with ease, plus it's gettting good reviews. "Basterds" pulled in an estimated $37Million over the weekend, which is pretty damned good. Now, I know that a lot of you guys dig Tarantino and consider him to be a massive influence. Me, I just think he's kinda overrated... but, if you did go out and see "Basterds", what did you think? "Pulp Fiction" or "Jackie Brown"?

As for indie horror, there's quite a few decent looking DVD's coming out this week. Too many to get into any depth on all of them, actually. So, we've got most of the trailers up on our
Youtube Page and I'll link to all of their pages on Amazon, so you can get more info on each of them and/or buy them... you know, if you so desire.

First up is "Abduction", from John Orrichio. Orrichio has made a few other indie films, including "Requiem for a Vampire" and "The Haunting of Danbury House", among others. The trailer is filled with T&A and the film is about a small vacation town that has a secret, underground internet business that specializes in selling human organs and babies, as well as auctioning off young women into sex slavery. One of Orrichio's other boob-filled movies, "Dreams of the Dead" is also available this week.

"Red Velvet" is apparently an Amazon.com exclusive, but I'm not sure what that actually means. It stars Henry Thomas, who peaked at around age 13, when he played Elliott in "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial". Since then, he's done tons of films, most of which are indie... a lot of which are of the horror variety. The film looks interesting, to say the least, and the killer appears to be some sort of human-rabbit-cyborg hybrid. Very strange. Check out the trailer.

If you're into the Asian shit... and I'm not talking J-Horror, I'm talking "Ichi The Killer" and "Machine Girl" type shit... check out "Onechanbara". It's based on the hit video game of the same title - I've never heard of it, but I don't claim to be on the bleeding edge of gaming and this could be an XBox exclusive. It's about a girl, armed with a sword and wearing her trademark bikini and cowboy hat, who's determined to track down her fathers killer. Oh... and it takes place in the year 20XX in a world where zombies have taken over the earth.

There's some other low-budget indie horror coming out, including: "Promise", starring Tiffany Shepis and directed by David M. Quiroz Jr.; "Frayed" (which looks to have been heavily influenced by "Halloween"), starring Kellee Bradley and Don Brady, directed by Norb Caoili and Rob Portmann; "Ghost Image" starring Elisabeth Rohm and Stacey Dash, directed by Jack Snyder and; "The Last Gateway" (which looks f'ing good and f'ing gory) starring Kevin Schiele and Rodrigo Aragon, directed by Demian Rugna.

Lastly, I wanted to mention "The Brass Ring", which also comes out this week. I mention it because, really, our readers are probably the only people who would truly, truly get it. It's a documentary on a group of friends, with no real film experience, in rural Ohio who set out to make a zombie epic with $7,500 and a Super-8 camera.

More Horror On The Interwebs...

Once again, I've got a loaded inbox and I'm going to throw some links and info at you. As long as I keep getting this stuff, I'll keep passing it on... and, like I said last week, if you have a Myspace page, a website or some sort of online deal that you want us to promote, let me know about it. I'll mention it.

So, I was looking into this new film, "Silent But Deadly", which comes out... I don't know. Some time in 2009. Anyhow, it's a horror/comedy from Michael Patrick Entertainment, directed by Stephen Scott and written by Erin Berry, David Pluscauskas, Lori Kelly and Joel Plue and it's about an unconventional and mysterious serial killer who takes aim at a Hollywood film set by unleashing his own brand of retribution on the cast and crew. Jason Mewes, of Kevin Smith fame, plays the killer and it's also got Will.I.Am Sadler and Kim Poirier in it, plus a bunch of other fairly notable names. Anyhow, check out the Myspace Page here... it looks like it's going to be pretty good.

So, I was reading this article on the Bit Torrent client, Vuze, a couple days ago. I even mentioned them in my post yesterday because of that article. Anyhow, I downloaded it and checked it out, as they were saying that you could stream to your PS3 through it now. Now, you can already stream from your PC to your PS3, but this just takes out a few steps and makes it easier, so it's not exactly the second coming of Christ or anything. Anyhow, that's not the point. The point is that most Bit Torrent clients are just that, stripped down ways for you to pirate shit. Vuze, which you can find at Vuze.com, is trying to be a lot more. They're trying to be more like Hulu or Youtube with their Vuze HD Network. It's actually a pretty cool way to search through torrents, but that's not all! They also have lots of legal content, like trailers, music videos and indie films, uploaded by the filmmakers. You read that right, you can upload your content. Not only that, you can charge people to download it or you can have it ad supported. Either way, it's a way to monetize what you've made and you don't have to deal with distributors or anything like that. Anyhow, if you've currently self-distributing your film, there's no reason NOT to check this out and use it. Click here to be taken right to their "publish" page. I'm so intrigued by this that I might contact them... I'll let you know how it goes.

Speaking of uploading and selling content through web portals, I think I told you about Eyesoda.com before. They want to build social networks around thought provoking indie films and music. You can go to the site, sign up and look around... you can also upload your film and build an online business. Hey, no reason not to use all of these, right? Who says you can't put your film on Vuze, put it on here, fuck... put it everywhere. Anyhow, they sent me a code to get a free movie download and I figure it's the same code that they sent to everyone. So, click HERE and it should take you to Eyesoda.com and you should be able to get a free movie download...

I was reading the "The Wrap" and came across this article from Eric Kohn called, "Niche Marketing Guru Has Recipe for Success". You can find it here. It doesn't mention horror at all, but it's an interesting little article on how marketing guys try to reach their target demographic for particular films.

Lastly, I'm sorry... I'm NOT a Tarantino fan. For me, he's got a pretty f'ing bad track record, really. Working backwards, I thought "Death Proof" was a disaster, I couldn't stand "Kill Bill" and "Jackie Brown" was not just awful, it was God awful. That leaves "Sin City", which I liked, but didn't love, "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs". He writes great dialogue, really has a knack for producing and nailed his role as Richard Gecko in "From Dusk Till Dawn". He's definitely a talent, I just think he's GROSSLY over-rated. Having said all that, head on over to The Weinstein Company's site, here, click on "coming soon", click on "read more" on that "Inglourious Basterds" tab... and you can check out the trailer for it, which looks f'ing good, I gotta say. Also, right below it, you can find out some more info on "H2". What's that? Well, if you didn't hear, it's Rob Zombie's sequel to "Halloween"... yup.

Linkapalooza - July 16, 2008... Quentin Tarantino is a bastard, er.. basterd. Uh, basturd?

As usual, lots of interesting things going on out there. This weeks Linkapalooza is a giant 'potpouri' of links, as some of this is fan-boy stuff and some of this is industry stuff. Either way, enjoy...

News recently broke about the script for Tarantino's long talked about WWII epic, "Inglorious Bastards" ...and I got so excited, I had to sit down. Here's a couple articles - Doubt Quentin Tarantino All You Want - But INGLORIOUS BASTARDS Will Carve Its Mark Into Your Skull When It Is Done! - on Aint in Cool News & We’ve Got Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Inglorious Bastards’ Script. I'm not going to lie, I'll be honest. I'm not a Tarantino fan... and I'll leave it at that. I've been in many a debate over it and I wouldn't shy away from another one, but that's for another day. Brad, on the other hand, is. So, this link is for him. I only ask one thing, check out that second article, what's with that handwritten title page? Is he a complete invalid? Not only does he write like a 2 year old, he spells "bastard" B A S T E R D. Anyhow, like him or hate him, "Inglorious Bassturds" is coming...

Michael Bay talks 'Transformers 2' and 'Friday the 13th' remake on EW.com: This is fairly fluff, but Entertainment Weekly talked with Michael Bay about 'Transformers 2' and 'Friday the 13th'. It's a fairly short interview and the bulk of it is actually about 'Friday the 13th'. If you're like me and don't want to see this remade and think that Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes are just money grubbing trolls for remaking it, you'll find it interesting to see how he tries to sell it. "We're fans ourselves!", "We try to be faithful", "You're just not going to believe the first 12 minutes!". If you're excited about the film and have nothing against Bay, the interview will reveal nothing, it's exactly what you thought it would be.

Now, on to some cool industry shit... PLAYSTATION Network's Video Delivery Service to Offer Movies and TV Shows for Purchase and Rental Through PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP - on iStockAnalyst.com: Here's the thing, if you're a regular reader, you'll probably remember the post about the Sony Bravia being able to connect to the internet and act as a segue, right? Well, Sony's making sure they own this space, they're pulling out all the stops. Basically, they want the PS3 to be the center-piece of the family room. They want it to be the portal where you watch movies, play video games, cruise the internet, everything... they're not alone, though. Microsoft is trying to do the same thing with XBox and then there's my underdog in the arean, Roku and Netflix, who are trying, as well. However, my underdog may REALLY be a crippled underdog, as they probably won't be capable of cruising the internet, let alone playing video games on. Whatever... either way, the way we watch movies and consume media is going to change, my friends!

Lionsgate, YouTube strike ad-share deal - on THR.com: Uh oh... what's going on out there? First... Sony, Microsoft and Roku are fighting to get a device in your living room that connects to the internet, now Lionsgate strikes a deal with Youtube? WTF? Don't take this lightly, by the way... studios used to be so arogant, they thought they could control how, when and where you saw films. Now, they're reeling. Not only that, they're trying everything to squeeze more money out of their catalogue of films. This is actually monumentary. Lionsgate is now working with a website that's known for showing pirated content. Basically, Lionsgate is getting its own Youtube channel, where they show their content, run ads and split revenue with Youtube.

TV Trends:Consumers Demand Control - on eMarketer.com: If you're willing to pay $695.00, you can actually buy the full 24 page report with all 58 charts, however if you click on the link there, you get 1 graph and a short blurb... which was enough for me. These guys do studies for the industry, then sell the studies and this time they did a study on TV Trends. Here's what they found... "Video-on-demand (VOD), digital video recorders (DVRs), the broadband Web, and 3G mobile phones are giving TV consumers new ways to access and watch TV (and they) estimate that by 2012 nearly 25% of all TV content watched each day will be time-shifted, on-demand, on the Web or on a mobile device." Better get that indie horror ready for VOD, DVR's, the web and 3G mobile phones...
